No. 10 CWRU Falls to #16 Chicago on Late Goal in NCAA Round of 16

Box Score

Tenth-ranked Case Western Reserve University saw its historic season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, as the Spartans suffered a 2-1 setback to the 16th-ranked University of Chicago in the Round of 16 of the 2021 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, Ohio.

Chicago, which improved to 15-2-4 following the win, will face fifth-seeded Christopher Newport University in the quarterfinals at DiSanto Field on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Captains bested 24th-ranked Trinity University 1-0 in the early contest on Saturday.

CWRU's goal came on a perfectly executed set piece in the 34th minute of the game. Senior defender Kat Rebele took a free kick from 37 yards out, sending a ball into the six-yard box. Senior midfielder Anika Washburn was able to sneak behind her defender and get on the end of the kick, tapping the ball past the keeper and into the net to give CWRU a 1-0 lead at the 33:20 mark.

The goal was Washburn's 15th of the season, breaking her own school record for goals in a campaign. She also extended her school record with her 40th point of the year. In addition, the goal was the 31st of her career, putting her in sole possession of the school's career record, while increasing her school career point record to 77.

Rebele earned her third assist of the year on the goal.

The goal was a part of a first half of play where the Spartans controlled the run of play for the majority of the period, holding a 3-2 edge in total shots.

However, Chicago increased the pressure in the second half of the game, and quickly evened the score on Nicole Kaspi's 11th goal of the season. CWRU goalkeeper Maggie Storti attempted to clear a ball, but the pass was intercepted by Chicago's Mollie Kassler, who fired a pass back into the box to Kaspi, who finished with the goal to knot the score at 1-1 at the 47:14 mark.

The score remained tied despite the Maroons continuing to press throughout the half. Storti made seven saves during the period to help keep the score tied. However, after a foul set up a free kick from 20 yards out for the Maroons in the 88th minute, Ariana Shutler was able to bend in a perfectly placed shot for her ninth goal of the campaign.

CWRU managed to force a corner kick and get off a pair of shots late, but Chicago was able to hold on for the win.

The loss put an end to the best season in the history of women's soccer at Case Western Reserve University. The Spartans' season ends with a record of 16-2-2, marking the most victories in a single season in program history. The finish in the round of 16 is the furthest that CWRU has ever advanced in the national tournament.
