Box Score 2 The Case Western Reserve University volleyball swept a pair of matches in Fredonia, New York on Saturday, defeating Hilbert College 3-0, and then earned another 3-0 victory over Fredonia State.
The Spartans improve to 12-11 on the season, while Hilbert drops to 0-17 and Fredonia moves to 11-11 overall. In addition, Case Western Reserve has now totaled nine sweeps this season.
CWRU defeated the Hawks in the first match of the day 25-4, 25-6 and 25-8. The Spartans performance was highlighted by a .400 hitting percentage throughout the three sets.
First-year outside hitters Rea Marfatia and Jolie Held led the Spartans with six kills, while senior right side hitter Kassie Blank, first-year right side hitter Lauren Himmel, sophomore middle blocker Karoline Shellhause and first-year Lily Crouch each collected three. First-year setter Ansley Yamaato led the team with 15 assists. Defensively, sophomore outside hitter Lindsay Schamp recorded a team-high nine digs, while sophomore outside hitter Hannah Fox tallied seven.
CWRU then earned another three-set victory over Fredonia, 25-16. 30-28, 25-18.
Marfatia and sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Ngo paced the Spartans on the attack with nine kills apiece, while junior outside hitter Gianna Lambert added five to the tally. Junior setter Sara Rogers led the team with 17 assists, while Yamaato added six. Rogers led the Spartan defense with 10 digs, while Marfatia and sophomore libero Alyssa Blessinger each contributed nine.
The Spartans will look to continue their streak of three-straight sweeps when they welcome the College of Wooster to Horsburgh Gymnasium on Saturday, October 30th. The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start. In addition, Saturday's match will serve as 'Senior Day' for the Spartans.
