Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team turned in a dominant performance on Wednesday night, picking up its seventh sweep of the season with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) win over Ohio Wesleyan University at Horsburgh Gymnasium in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Spartans improved to 10-11 overall with the win, while Ohio Wesleyan dropped to 10-11 with the loss.

Case Western Reserve looked strong from the start, as they took an early 11-5 lead in the first set after a block assist from sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Ngo and first-year right side hitter Chloe Maciejewski. Following a timeout, the Battling Bishops went on an 8-4 run to cut the Spartan advantage to just two at 15-13. CWRU responded by scoring six of the next nine points to increase the lead to 21-16 after a kill by junior outside hitter Gianna Lambert. The Spartans would then score four-straight points to claim the 25-16 win.

In the second set, the two teams battled back and forth until CWRU took a 17-15 lead after a kill by first-year outside hitter Rea Marfatia and an attacking error by OWU. After a Battling Bishops timeout, the Spartans went on an 8-6 run that was capped off by a block from Ngo to secure the 25-21 victory.

CWRU trailed early in the third set, but a pair of service aces from first-year setter Ansley Yamaato capped off a 7-2 run for the Spartans that propelled them to an 11-9 lead. CWRU continued that momentum throughout the rest of the set as they closed on a 14-11 run to earn the 25-20 set victory, and a 3-0 win in the match.

Marfatia led all Spartan players with 12 kills on 29 total attempts for a .345 hitting percentage, while Lambert added five kills. Junior setter Sara Rogers tallied a team-best 20 assists and 17 digs. In addition, Ngo registered a game-high seven blocks, including four solo.

CWRU finished with an edge in hitting percentage, finishing with a mark of .170 (32-15 – 100) compared to Ohio Wesleyan's .074 (35-26 – 121). The Spartans also finished the match with a narrow edge in digs, 55-47.

Case Western Reserve will be back in action this weekend when they travel to Fredonia, New York on Saturday, October 23rd. CWRU will open play against Hilbert College at 1:30 p.m. and conclude the day against host Fredonia State at 4:00 p.m.
