Box Score The eighth-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision to University Athletic Association opponent and 25th-ranked Emory University on Friday in Atlanta, Georgia.
The loss ends the Spartans' (11-1-0, 2-1-0 UAA) 11-match winning streak to open the season. Emory improved to 9-3-1, 1-2-0 in the UAA with the victory.
Olivia McBerry gave the Eagles an early lead on Friday, sending a long shot into the far corner of the goal at the 24:05 mark. It was the sixth goal of the season for McBerry, while Aubrey Blanchard was credited with the assist, her third on the campaign.
Emory extended its lead just over a minute later on Mia Han's third goal of the season. Blanchard was credited with her second assist of the game and fourth on the season.
The Spartans came out aggressive to start the second half, when senior midfielder Anika Washburn intercepted a pass and then found junior forward Helina VanBibber crossing up the middle. VanBibber then beat the keeper to the lower left of the goal at the 46:43 mark for her second goal of the season. The assist was Washburn's sixth on the season, and it marked the sixth-straight game that she has scored at least one point. In addition, Washburn has had a goal or an assist in all but one game this year.
However, CWRU was unable to find the equalizer during the rest of the half as the Eagles secured the victory.
For the match, Emory outshot the Spartans and held the advantage in corner kicks. Washburn recorded a team-high five shots, including four on goal, while VanBibber and senior midfielder Lexi Gomez each registered one shot on goal.
In net, sophomore Maggie Storti took the loss. She made four saves throughout her 90 minutes of action.
Case Western Reserve will be back in action on Sunday, October 17th, when the team heads to Rochester, New York to take on the University of Rochester for an 11:00 a.m. match.
