CWRU Volleyball Sweeps Hiram on Wednesday

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team earned a sweep on Wednesday evening at Horsburgh Gymnasium, as the Spartans topped Hiram College with scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-22.

With the win, CWRU improved to 9-9 on the season, while the Terriers dropped to 10-11 on the campaign.

Statistically, sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Ngo posted a team-high 10 kills, while junior outside hitter Meara Reeder and first-year right side hitter Chloe Maciejewski tallied seven and six kills, respectively. Junior setter Sara Rogers led the Spartans with 24 assists.

Defensively, sophomore libero Alyssa Blessinger contributed 18 digs and first-year outside hitter Rea Marfatia added 16 to the total. Ngo led CWRU with eight total blocks.

The Spartans trailed by three points early in the first set but went on a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead after a block by Ngo and Reeder. Hiram answered with a 9-6 run cut the deficit to 20-18, however CWRU would hold on to close out the set as they scored five of the last seven points to claim the 25-20 victory.

The Spartans came out strong in the second, as they jumped out to a 9-3 lead after a kill by Marfatia. CWRU continued to dominate as they pushed the advantage to 19-9 after a kill by Maciejewski. Following a Terriers' timeout, the Spartans closed out the set with a 6-2 run to secure the 25-11 win.

The two teams battled back and forth in the third set until Hiram took a 17-14 lead after a kill by junior Lyndsey Johns. Following a CWRU timeout, the Spartans scored four of the next six points to cut the deficit to 19-18 after a service ace by first-year setter Ansley Yamaato. CWRU then took a 22-21 lead after a service ace by Reeder. The Spartans closed out the set with a pair of blocks, including a block assist by Rogers and senior middle blocker Maggie Sereika that sealed the 25-22 victory.

Hiram was led by senior Kiara Franks with 11 kills and nine digs.

Case Western Reserve will return to action on Sunday as they travel to Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia for University Athletic Association Round Robin #3. CWRU is set to play Washington (Mo.) University at 12:00 p.m. and then conclude the round with a match against 10th-ranked New York University at 2:00 p.m.
