With next year marking the 50th-year of athletic competition at CWRU, we will be taking a look back at some of the teams and alumni throughout the program's history. Each Friday, we will be interviewing alumni throughout the school's history on their experience at the University, and what they have done since their time as athletes.
This week, we were joined by Head Baseball Coach Matt Englander, catcher Peter Zak (class of 2012) and pitcher Jamie Hora (class of 2013) to discuss the Spartans win over Adrian College at the 2011 NCAA Division III Baseball Regionals. The Spartans were coming off their second-straight winning regular season under Matt Englander, after previously having not notched an above .500 campaign since 1996, and had qualified for the NCAA Tournament after going 30-13 during the regular season, setting a program record for wins in a season. The Spartans were the number six seed in the regional, and set to face third-seeded and nationally 15th-ranked Adrian in the opening game of the pod. Trailing 4-1 heading into the ninth inning, Zak hit a one-out, pinch hit grand slam home run to give the Spartans the lead, and Hora closed out a complete game win with a one-two-three bottom of the ninth.
