Softball Sweeps on Final Day of The Spring Games

The Case Western Reserve University softball team swept its final two games at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida on Friday, as the Spartans topped the College of Wooster 6-2 in the first game, and then the offense erupted to earn a 12-2 victory in five innings over Defiance College in the second game.

With the pair of wins, the Spartans concluded the shortened 2020 campaign with a 6-4 overall record. Wooster dropped to 3-4 on the season, while Defiance fell to 5-9 overall.

Game 1: CWRU 6, Wooster 2
The early game on Friday featured the Spartans jumping out to an early, as CWRU struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Liv Thomas opened the scoring as she drove in senior Nicole Carty on a RBI single to left field. Senior Caitlin Smith followed later in the inning with a two-run RBI single up the middle that scored first-year Lexi Villafuerte and first-year Amanda Riely.

The Spartans added to their lead in the fourth as junior Arisa Cleaveland scored after senior Dusstyn Reynolds was caught stealing second base. CWRU concluded their scoring in the bottom of the sixth, when Reynolds launched a RBI double to right field and then Carty hit a RBI single to left center field. The Fighting Scots scored two runs of their own in the top of the seventh, but the Spartans were able to hold on for the 6-2 victory.

Senior Ilissa Hamilton started and went the distance on the mound, as she did not allow an earned run on six hits and striking out five batters. She improved to 3-1 with the victory.

Seven different Spartans collected a hit in the first game, including a three-for-three performance from Carty and two-for-two game from Smith.

Game 2: CWRU 12, Defiance 2 (five innings)
CWRU scored a run in four out of the five innings during the second game of the day, including five-run innings in both the second inning and fifth inning to secure the 12-2 win over Defiance.

Junior Sidney Brannam went seven innings, holding Defiance to two earned runs on five hits and a walk, while striking out four batters. It was her third win of the 2020 campaign.

Junior Sarah Miller led the Spartans at the plate during the second game, as she went four-for-four with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Reynolds, Smith and Riely each drove in two of the Spartans' 12 runs, while four other Spartans notched an RBI in the game.

Case Western Reserve finished the shortened 2020 campaign with a 6-4 overall record.
