Spartan Swimming & Diving Splits Dual Meet Against SUNY-Geneseo

The Case Western Reserve University swimming and diving teams split a dual meet at the Veale Natatorium in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday afternoon, with the men claiming a 179.5-114.5 over SUNY-Geneseo, but the women falling 150-144 against the Knights.

The Spartan men improve to 4-2 in dual meets this season, while the women fall to 4-2 following Saturday's meet.

Junior Sean Twomey, sophomore Nicholas Schoenig and first-year Andrew Smith headlined the men's performances as Twomey won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:11.81) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.14), Schoenig claimed victories in the 100-yard freestyle (48.37) and the 100-yard backstroke (52.18), and Andrew Smith claimed titles in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.72) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.77).

In addition, Schoenig and Smith teamed with junior Will McDonald and first-year Will Bryant to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.14. The men's 200-yard medley relay team of Schoenig, sophomore Calvin Tecson, first-year Patrick Cavanaugh and first-year Anatole Borisov added a first-place finish with a time of 1:35.81.

Other first-place finishers for the Spartan men included McDonald in the 200-yard backstroke (1:55.67), Tecson in the 50-yard freestyle (21.48) and sophomore Michael Clough in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.24).

For the women Junior Caitlyn VonFeldt, first-year Abby Halsdorfer and first-year Maria Pritchett each picked up two individual victories. VonFeldt won the 100-yard backstroke (59.71) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:09.06), Halsdorfer claimed victories in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:44.74) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:18.57), and Pritchett claimed titles in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.68) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.05).

In addition, VonFeldt teamed with sophomore Anna Smith, sophomore Sarah Krueger and sophomore Kelly Moton to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:49.61. The women's 400-yard freestyle relay of VonFeldt, Smith, Krueger and sophomore Daniella Rupert added a first-place finish with a time of 3:39.05.

Other first-place finishers for the Spartan women included Anna Smith in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.46) and senior Olivia Picchione in the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.62).

The Spartans will be back in action next weekend, facing Ohio Northern University and Hillsdale College in the Veale Natatorium on Saturday, January 25th at 1:00 p.m.
