Doyle Leads Spartans to Sweep over Heidelberg

Senior shortstop Nicole Doyle of the Case Western Reserve University softball team went five-for-eight at the plate and drove in six RBI's, as the Spartans swept a doubleheader over Heidelberg University at Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio on Wednesday afternoon. CWRU picked up a 8-0 win in six innings over the Student Princes in the early contest, and a 9-4 victory in the late affair.

The two wins raised the Spartans' record to 18-10 on the year, while Heidelberg fell to 12-18 with the losses.

Doyle led the Spartans at the plate with a five-for-eight performance, including one home run, two doubles and six runs batted in.

Game 1: CWRU 8, Heidelberg 0 (6 innings)
The Spartans scored a run in the second, five runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth to secure an 8-0 win in six innings over the Student Princes during the early game.

Junior Ilissa Hamilton pitched all six innings, holding Heidelberg scoreless on six hits and a walk, while striking out five batters. It was her ninth win of the season, as she is now 9-4 overall on the campaign.

Sophomore Sydney Wagner got the Spartans on the board in the second inning with an infield single that allowed junior Nicole Carty to score.

The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Spartans broke out for five runs in the inning. Wagner laced a two-run RBI double to right center that scored sophomores Sarah Miller and Hope Yashnik. Doyle then drove a bases clearing RBI double to right center that scored three more runs to increase the Spartan advantage to 6-0.

CWRU added to the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Doyle and sophomore Arisa Cleaveland executed a double steal that allowed Cleaveland to score. Freshman Liv Thomas then hit a RBI single that drove in Doyle to secure the 8-0 victory in six innings.

Doyle finished the first game three-for-four at the plate with three RBI's and one run scored, while Cleaveland also added a three-for-four performance with two runs scored.

Game 2: CWRU 9, Heidelberg 4
The second game of the day was scoreless until the top of the second when Heidelberg got on the board with a solo home run from Kaitlyn Moore.

CWRU quickly responded the next half inning as they scored five runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Included in the inning was a solo home run from Carty, a three run homer from Doyle and a RBI single from junior Melissa Cuellar.

The Student Princes scored two runs in the top of the third to cut the CWRU lead 5-3. The Spartans would increase the advantage in the bottom of the fourth when Carty single up the middle to score sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds. Miller and freshman Hannah Olivares then executed a perfect double-steal, which allowed Miller to score. Yashnik capped of the scoring in the inning with a RBI double that put the Spartans up 8-3 after four innings of play.

Heidelberg would score a run in the top of the fifth and CWRU would match that with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, as the Spartans would eventually hold on for the 9-4 victory.

Sophomore Sidney Brannam pitched the complete game, as she scattered six hits, while striking out three batters and yielding two earned runs. She improved to 8-5 on the season.

At the plate, Cleaveland went three-for-four, while Doyle added a two-for-four game with one home run and three runs batted in.

Case Western Reserve will continue its home stand this weekend, when the team welcomes University Athletic Association rival Emory University to Mather Park for a four-game series on Friday and Saturday. The first game of the doubleheader on Friday is slated to start at 2:00 p.m.
