Spartan Softball Splits Doubleheader at #21 Brandeis on Friday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team split the first two games of their four-game series at 21st-ranked Brandeis University on Friday afternoon in Waltham, Massachusetts. The Spartans defeated the Judges 4-2 in the first game of the day, but lost 5-0 in the second contest.

With the split, the Spartans now stand at 16-8 overall and 5-3 in the UAA, while the Judges are 16-1-1 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

Game 1: CWRU 4, #21 Brandeis 2
The first game went scoreless through the first two innings, before the Spartans broke through in the top of the third when sophomore Dusstyn Reynolds hit a RBI single to center field that scored sophomore Sydney Wagner.

CWRU added another run in the top of the sixth when freshman Grace Yeung delivered a pinch-hit RBI single that scored junior Caitlin Smith. The Judges responded the next half inning as Amidori Anderson and Keri Lehtonen each recorded RBI doubles to even the score at 2-2 after six innings of play.

The Spartans would be able to regain the lead in the top of the seventh when Reynolds singled to center field and the Brandeis left fielder made an error, which allowed sophomore Arisa Cleaveland to come around and score. Junior Melissa Cuellar added another run in the inning after she lined a RBI single to center field that scored Reynolds. CWRU was able to hold in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 4-2 victory.

Reynolds and junior Nicole Carty led the Spartans at the plate, as they each registered a pair of hits.

CWRU junior pitcher Ilissa Hamilton went the distance, striking out 10 batters and allowing two earned runs on eight hits. She improved to 8-3 on the season with the victory. Scottie Todd suffered the loss for the Judges, falling to 8-1 on the campaign.

Game 2: #21 Brandeis 5, CWRU 0
A run in the second, and a pair of runs in the third and the fifth from Brandeis proved to be the difference in the late game on Friday, as the Spartans fell to the Judges 5-0.

The loss was credited to sophomore Sidney Brannam, who went three innings and allowed two earned runs on three hits. She fell to 7-4 with the loss. Yeung pitched the final three innings in relief, as she allowed two earned on three hits, while striking out two batters. Sydney Goldman earned the win for the Judges, improving to 7-0 on the season.

Freshman Liv Thomas accounted for the teams only hit, while freshman Brittany Hoopingarner registered a walk during the game.

Case Western Reserve will return to action tomorrow, as they wrap-up their four-game series against Brandeis at Marcus Field in Waltham, Massachusetts. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
