Senior Suhan Mestha finished third in the 100-yard backstroke to highlight the Spartans' Friday night performances at the 2019 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois.
Mestha placed third in the 100-yard backstroke with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 56.81. Sophomore Caitlyn VonFeldt added a 10th place finish in the event with a time of 57.79, while freshman Anna Smith finished 16th with a time of 59.09.
For the women, the 200-yard medley relay team of Mestha, VonFeldt, Smith and senior Alli Drohosky placed fifth in the event with a NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:45.02. The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Alexa Simoneau, junior Olivia Picchione, freshman Daniella Rupert and freshman Sarah Krueger finished seventh in the event with a time of 7:56.94.
Individually for the Spartan women, Smith placed 10th in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.10, while Simoneau earned a 12th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.91. Junior Sarah Taekman added a 16th-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:41.74.
For the men, the 200-yard medley relay team of sophomores Will McDonald, Andrew Duffield and Jakob Woerner and freshman Calvin Tecson finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:34.12. The men's 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Brody Schmidt, senior Keith Erichsen, freshman Neil Wible and freshman Ryan Gilbert added a sixth place finish in the event with a time of 6:55.48.
Individually for the men, sophomore Sean Twomey placed 14th in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:06.38. Wible added a 16th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.40, while McDonald finished 17th in the 100-yard backstroke with a new school record time of 51.22.
With one day remaining at the UAA Championships, the Case Western Reserve men are in sixth place with 463 points, while the women are in sixth with 495. Emory leads both team standings, with the women totaling 1,342 points and the men 1,389 points through three days of competition.
The 2019 UAA Championships will conclude on Saturday, with the women's one-meter dive, the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle relay on the slate of events for the final day.
