The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team turned in a successful 2017-18 campaign, going 8-2 in dual meets, winning the Wooster Invitational, and finishing second at the Midwest Invitational.

Senior Drew Hamilton led the Spartan men this season as he qualified for his fourth-straight NCAA Championships. In addition, Hamilton received the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and was awarded the NCAA's Elite 90 Award at this year's NCAA Championships, presented to the athlete at the meet with the highest cumulative grade point average, becoming the first CWRU swimmer and third CWRU athlete overall to claim the honor. Hamilton also was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for his performance in both the pool and the classroom over his career as a Spartan.

The Spartan men found success at the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships, hosted by Emory University, with Hamilton placing third in the 400-yard individual medley to earn All-UAA honors in the event. Hamilton placed third in the event with a time of 3:59.25, which was also a NCAA 'B' cut time. Freshman Sean Twomey added a seventh place finish in the event with a time of 4:05.09.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Hamilton, senior Oliver Hudgins, senior John Kilbane and senior Aaron Pang finished sixth in the event with a time of 1:34.64. Hamilton, Hudgins and Twomey also teamed with junior Brody Schmidt in the 800-yard freestyle relay to place sixth with a time of 6:48.77. The Spartan men totaled 772.50 points over the four-day meet, finishing sixth at the conference championships.

Earlier in the year, Case Western Reserve won the Wooster Invitational in December, marking the eighth-straight season that the Spartans have won the event. The Spartans totaled 1,899 points to finish ahead of the nine other teams, an outscored second-place Westminster by over 650 points. Spartan swimmers notched 17 individual top-three finishes at the meet, with Hamilton claiming first in the 500-yard freestyle, first in the 400-yad individual medley and first in the 100-yard individual medley, junior Keith Erichsen finishing first in the 1,650-yard freestyle and third in the 500-yard freestyle, Pang finishing second in the 200-yard butterfly and third in the 200-yard individual medley, Hudgins finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly and first in the 200-yard backstroke, Twomey finishing third in the 400-yard individual medley, Kilbane finishing third in the 100-yard breaststroke, senior David Merriman finishing second in the 1,650-yard freestyle, senior Evan Rose finishing first in the 200-yard breaststroke, sophomore A.J. Quinn finishing second in the 200-yard breaststroke, Schmidt finishing third in the 200-yard breaststroke and freshman Cassiel Yuzik finishing third in the three-meter dive.

The Spartans turned in a solid dual meet campaign, winning eight of their 10 meets during the campaign, including a 6-1 record at home during the year. The Spartans racked up wins against John Carroll, Wooster, Oberlin, Grove City, Gannon, Rochester, Ohio Northern and Baldwin Wallace during the year. The team's only two losses during the season came to Carnegie Mellon and SUNY-Geneseo, both highly ranked Division III programs.

Spartan swimmers to record top-10 times in school history included Hamilton in the 100 Free (46.15, third-best in CWRU history), in the 100 IM (52.72, best in CWRU history) and in the 200 IM (1:53.73, best in CWRU history), Schmidt in the 200 Free (1:43.24, ninth-best in CWRU history), in the 1,650 Free (16:15.75, ninth-best in CWRU history) and in the 200 Breast (2:06.83, seventh-best in CWRU history), Erichsen in the 500 Free (4:38.52, sixth-best in CWRU history) and in the 400 IM (4:09.97, ninth-best in CWRU history), freshman Will McDonald in the 100 Back (52.53, sixth-best in CWRU history) and in the 200 Back (1:52.74, third-best in CWRU history), Twomey in the 200 Breast (2:08.40, ninth-best in CWRU history), in the 200 IM (1:55.29, sixth-best in CWRU history) and in the 400 IM (4:04.70, second-best in CWRU history), senior Evan Rose in the 200 Breast (2:05.61, sixth-best in CWRU history) and in the 100 IM (57.60, ninth-best in CWRU history), freshman Dakota Weinman in the 100 Back (52.81, eighth-best in CWRU history), Kilbane in the 100 Breast (57.63, sixth-best in CWRU history), Pang in the 100 IM (54.54, third-best in CWRU history), Hudgins in the 100 IM (55.16, fifth-best in CWRU history), senior Dominic Kizek in the 100 IM (56.64, seventh-best in CWRU history) and senior Stefan Roeseler in the 100 IM (57.30, eighth-best in CWRU history). Yuzik was the team's top diver, recording scores of 402.90 in the one-meter dive (11 dives) and 365.80 in the three-meter dive (11 dives) at the 2018 UAA Championships.

In addition to their success in the pool, the Spartans were recognized by the CSCAA as a Scholar All-America Team, based on their team grade point average of 3.64 during the fall semester. Sixteen members of the men's swimming and diving team – James Anibal, Erichsen, Hamilton, Kilbane, Kizek, Ondrej Maxian, Vinicius Okada da Silva, Pang, James Pierre, Quinn, Eli Rose, Evan Rose, Schmidt, Jared Shanks, Logan Smith and John Tomko – received UAA Winter All-Academic recognition during the 2017-18 campaign.
