Members of the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team totaled two All-America honorable mention certificates at the 2017 NCAA Division III Championships, as the Spartans capped off an outstanding 2016-17 campaign with a 40th-place finish in the nation.
Junior Drew Hamilton recorded two individual All-America honorable mention finishes at the NCAA Championships in Shenandoah, Texas. He finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:30.51, and ninth in the 400-yard individual medley in a school-record time of 3:57.85. Hamilton now has collected five All-American certificates in his career, including the two earned during this year's championships. Altogether, Case Western Reserve competitors totaled 11 points at the meet, leading to the 40th-place finish.
The Spartans' success at the NCAA Championships, followed a number of standout performances at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Junior Oliver Hudgins placed third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.68 and also broke the school record in the 200-yard backstroke en route to placing second in the event with a time of 1:48.79. That time bested his previous school record of 1:50.00 set at the 2016 UAA Championships. In addition, the Spartans 800-yard freestyle relay of Hamilton, Hudgins, senior Andrew Henning and sophomore Brody Schmidt finished second in the event with a time of 6:45.24.
One other school record fell for the Spartans at the UAA Championships. The Spartans 400-yard medley relay of Hudgins, Hamilton, freshman Mason Beck and freshman John Libert placed fifth with a time of 3:25.47. Hudgins' 100-yard backstroke time in the relay broke the program record in the event with a time of 51.40, besting the previous record of 51.47 set back in 2014.
The Spartans totaled 786 points during the UAA Championships to finish sixth at the annual conference meet.
In December, the Spartans finished first out of nine teams at the Wooster Invitational for the seventh-straight season, totaling 1,618 points to clear the second-place squad by more than 400 points. Case Western Reserve won five events during the meet, with Hamilton claiming first-place in the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley, senior David Merriman winning the 1,650-yard freestyle, Beck winning the 200-yard breaststroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay of Hamilton, Hudgins Henning and Schmidt claiming the title in the event.
The Spartans finished the 2016-17 season with an 8-2 dual meet record, including eight consecutive wins to end the season.
In addition to their work in the pool, the Spartans were recognized as a team for their academic achievements, as the team received Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a team grade point average of 3.61 during the spring semester, the fifth highest among Division III teams. In addition, Henning and Hamilton received individual Scholar All-America honors from the CSCAA, while sophomore Keith Erichsen was an honorable mention to the Scholar All-America team. Thirteen members of the Case Western Reserve men's swimming and diving team – Erichsen, Hamilton, Henning, junior John Kilbane, junior Ondrej Maxian, sophomore Vinicius Okada da Silva, sophomore Neil Orton, junior Aaron Pang, junior Evan Rose, Schmidt, sophomore Jared Shanks, junior Logan Smith and senior John Tomko – received UAA Winter All-Academic recognition.
