Spartans End Season with Win over Rochester in UAA Volleyball Championship Fifth Place Match

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team won by a score of 3-0 to the University of Rochester in the fifth place match at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The Spartans conclude the season at 19-12. The program has produced nine winning seasons in the past 10 years.

The Spartans edged Rochester (19-13) by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-14.

CWRU led early in the first set after sophomore outside hitter Brianna Lemon's kill that gave the Spartans a 13-7 advantage. The Spartans then went on a 10-3 run that was capped off by a block assist from Lemon and sophomore middle hitter Haley Sims to give CWRU a 23-10 lead. The Yellowjackets rallied back to go on an 8-0 run, but the Spartans closed them out with kills from freshman outside hitter Anna Jaskoviak and sophomore outside hitter Karley King to win the set 25-18.

Rochester came out strong in the second set by leading 15-10, but the Spartans responded with a 10-3 run after a kill by Lemon to put CWRU up 20-18. After some back and forth play, the Spartans closed out the set with a block assist from Lemon and Sims, and kill by Sims to secure the 25-23 victory.

CWRU came out firing in the third set to get out to a 12-5 lead after a block assist from freshman middle blocker Katie Kaminski and King. Rochester answered with a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to 14-11, but the Spartans would respond with an 11-3 run capped off by a Sims block to clinch the match victory.

Statistically, Lemon led the Spartan attack with 14 kills, while Sims contributed eight. Sophomore setter Faith Ellis paced the offense with 28 assists.

Defensively, Ellis and Jaskoviak led the Spartans with 10 digs apiece. Sims led in blocks with five total, including two solo blocks.

Clara Martinez led the Yellowjackets with eight kills, while Renae Lapins set the Rochester offense with 17 assists. Courtney Vidovich and Sara Apanavicius led the defense with 18 and 10 digs, respectively.
