Spartans Drop Nail-Biter at Hiram in Mid-Week Matchup

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team fell to Hiram College 3-2 (25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-27 and 15-17) on Wednesday night at the Price Gymnasium in Hiram, Ohio.

With the loss, CWRU dropped to 16-11 overall on the season. The Terriers improved to 16-9 on the year with the win.

The Spartans were led on the attack by freshman outside hitter Anna Jaskoviak who tallied 15 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Brianna Lemon contributed 14 kills and a team-high 23 digs, while freshman middle blocker Katie Kaminski added 11 kills. Sophomore setter Faith Ellis rounded up 43 assists. In the back row for the Spartans, junior libero Karina Bondelid tallied 18 digs and Jaskoviak contributed 15 throughout the match.

After tying the score early twice in the first set, the Spartans took an 18-16 lead after a kill from Lemon. After the Terriers closed the gap to one point, 20-19, CWRU scored five of the last eight points as Jaskoviak finished the set with a kill for the 25-22 win.

The Spartans dropped the second set, and fell behind 10-9 in the third, before rallying to score 11 of the next 18 points and regain control of the game, en route to a 25-22 victory.

In the fourth, CWRU hit the ignition with a kill by Lemon to give the Spartans an 8-3 lead. The Terriers came back and tied the game at 11-11, but CWRU answered with a kill from sophomore middle hitter Haley Sims. Hiram would close out the set with a 16-13 run to earn the 27-25 win.

CWRU rallied in the fifth to open the set with 5-3 lead after a kill from sophomore outside hitter Karley King, but the Terriers would gain the momentum with a 14-10 run to earn the win in the final set, clinching the match victory.

Case Western Reserve will return to action on Saturday, October 28th, when they welcome the College of Wooster to Horsburgh Gymnasium for a 1:00 p.m. start. Saturday's match will also serve as the senior day celebration, to recognize the fine accomplishments of the one senior Spartan volleyball player who has given her time and hard work to program.
