Box Score The Case Western University women's soccer team hung tight with one of the top teams in the country throughout the night on Friday, but a late goal in the final minute by the nationally second-ranked Washington (Mo.) University propelled the Bears past the Spartans 1-0 at Francis Field in St. Louis, Missouri.
The loss dropped Case Western Reserve to 5-8-0 overall, including a 0-3-0 mark in University Athletic Association games, while WashU improved to 12-0-1 overall with a 3-0-0 conference ledger.
The two teams played to a scoreless first half on Friday, with WashU holding an edge in total shots, 11-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Unterborn made five first half saves to help keep the Bears off the board, while junior Angelina Batty had the team's only shot on goal during he half, launching a ball on frame in the 40th minute that was saved by Washington keeper Emma Greenfield.
In the second half, the Spartans best chance of the game came in the 50th minute, when sophomore Kimberly Chen headed a shot that was saved by Greenfield.
The contest remained knotted in a scoreless draw until the final minute of the game, when Jessica Kovach crossed a ball right in front of net, and Taylor Cohen fought for the ball and chipped it into the net for her 13th goal of the season with 11 seconds remaining, with what would prove to be the game-deciding score.
The Spartans will continue its road-trip on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Chicago, Illinois to play against the first-ranked University of Chicago on Stagg Field at 2:30 p.m. ET.
