Box Score Freshman outside hitter Brianna Lemon and freshman middle hitter Haley Sims racked up 20 and 15 kills, respectively, to lead the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team to a 3-2 win versus local rival John Carroll University on Wednesday evening in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans are now 4-0 on the season and head into a weekend of competition at the 18th Annual Marcia French Invitational.
Sophomore setter Shannon Carroll tied a career-high with 53 assists and freshman defensive specialist Christine Tamura led the Spartans with 15 digs.
CWRU lead by as many as seven in the first after a successful attack by Sims for a 19-12 lead. After some back and forth play, the Blue Streaks were only able to cut the deficit down by two. The Spartans would go on to win the first 25-23.
In the second, the Spartans hit the ignition with a service ace by Sims to give CWRU a 6-3 lead. JCU came back and cut the lead to 15-13, but the Spartans answered with a kill from Lemon. The Spartans would end the second 25-18 with a successful attack from Carroll.
Despite losses in both the third and fourth sets, the Spartans came back to win the fifth (15-5) to open their home schedule with a win.
The Spartans will return to action on Friday, September 9th and Saturday, September 10th as the program will co-host the annual Marcia French Invitational alongside Baldwin Wallace University. The Spartans will play the first match of the doubleheader on Friday at 5:30 p.m. against the Rochester Institute of Technology.
