Members of the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team totaled seven all-America honorable mention certificates at the 2016 NCAA Division III Championships, as the Spartans capped off an outstanding 2015-16 campaign with a 33rd-place finish in the nation.
A pair of seniors recorded individual All-America honorable mention finishes at the NCAA Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina, with Aaron Tam finishing 13th in the 200-yard butterfly in a school-record time of 1:49.76, and Connor Farrell finishing 14th in the three-meter dive, the best finish ever by a Spartan in a diving event at the national meet. Tam also set a school-record in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.05 seconds as the leadoff leg of the 400-yard freestyle at the meet, and teamed with sophomores Drew Hamilton and Oliver Hudgins and junior Andrew Henning to place 10th in the 800-yard freestyle to set a third school record with a mark of 6:42.43. Altogether, Case Western Reserve competitors totaled 21 points at the meet, leading to the 33rd-place finish.
The Spartans' success at the NCAA Championships, followed a number of standout performances at the 2016 University Athletic Association Championships in Webster, New York. Farrell won the three-meter dive with a score of 539.35 and finished second in the one-meter dive with a mark of 493.50, both school records, en route to becoming the first Spartan ever to be named the conference Diver of the Year. In addition, the Spartan's 800-yard freestyle relay of Hamilton, Henning, Hudgins and Tam claimed a win in the event, becoming the first CWRU squad ever to win a relay event at the UAA Championships.
Hudgins added all-UAA honors with third-place finishes in both the 200-yard freestyle (1:40.11) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:50.00), setting school records in each event, while Hamilton added an all-conference certificate in the 400-yard individual medley with a second-place finish. A fifth school record was set by the Spartans during the UAA Championships, as the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Tam, Hamilton, Hudgins and senior Elliott Kerbel notched a time of 3:03.87 in the event.
The Spartans totaled 836 points during the UAA Championships to finish sixth at the annual conference meet.
In December, the Spartans finished first out of nine teams at the Wooster Invitational for the sixth-straight season, totaling 1,775.5 points to clear the second-place squad by more than 500 points. Case Western Reserve won five events during the meet, with Hamilton claiming first-place in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle, Farrell winning the one-meter dive and three-meter dive, and Tam placing first in the 200-yard butterfly.
The Spartans finished the 2015-16 season with a 10-1 dual meet record, including nine-consecutive wins to end the season. Also during the campaign, Farrell was selected as the UAA Diver of the Week on eight occasions, while sophomore Stefan Roeseler was selected as the conference swimmer of the week on February 15th, following his performance at the Midwest Invitational.
In addition to their work in the pool, the Spartans were recognized as a team for their academic achievements, as the team received Scholar All-America honors from the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) with a team grade point average of 3.58 during the spring semester, the fifth highest among Division III teams. In addition, Farrell, Henning and Hamilton received individual Scholar All-America honors from the CSCAA, while sophomores Aaron Pang and Logan Smith were honorable mentions to the Scholar All-America team. Twelve members of the Case Western Reserve men's swimming and diving team received UAA Winter All-Academic recognition.
