Spartans Drop Two Games on Day Four of the UAA Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University softball team dropped a 2-0 game against the New York University Violets followed by a 7-2 loss against the No. 4 Emory University Eagles on the fourth day of competition in the University Athletic Association Championship Tournament in Sanford,

The Spartans dropped to 6-11 overall and 1-6 in the UAA, while the Violets improved to 4-7 for the season (3-4 UAA) and the Eagles improved to 18-1 this season (7-0 UAA).

Game 1: NYU 2, CWRU 0
A two-run home run from from NYU's Claire Stefanelli in the fourth inning proved to be the difference on Friday, as the Spartans fell to the Violets on Friday.

The loss came despite solid pitching performances from a pair of Spartans in the game.  Junior Annie Wennerberg allowed the only two runs on four hits and a walk, while striking out three over four innings of work.  Katie Dzierwa pitched the final three scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and a walk and striking out a pair.

However, Case Western Reserve could not get its offense on track in the game against NYU starter Diana King, who held the Spartans scoreless on four hits, while striking out a pair without walking a batter, improving to 1-1 on the year with the complete-game win.

Katie Wede and Nicole Doyle each had doubles for the Spartans, accounting for two of the team's four hits.  Wennerberg took the loss for CWRU, falling to 3-5 for the season.

Game 2: No. 4 Emory 7, CWRU 2
A bases-loaded walk in the first and a solo home run in the third from Cassie Baca gave Emory a 2-0 advantage, before Nicole Doyle got the Spartans' on the board in the top of the fourth with a base hit, scoring Grace Tritchler.  However, Emory extended its lead in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Taylor Forte.

An RBI groundout from Wennerberg in the top of the fifth scored Kristen Klemmer, and cut the Emory lead to 4-2, but the Eagles would add a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, and capped off the scoring with a solo home run from Melody Carter in the bottom of the sixth.

Rebecca Molnar took the loss for CWRU, falling to 2-3 on the year.  Lindsey Robinson, Klemmer, Maren Waldner and Tritchler each had hits in the game for Case Western Reserve.

The Spartans will continue to play in the UAA Championship Tournament on Saturday, March 12 with a game against The University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m. and round out the fifth day of competition against Brandeis University at 1:00 p.m.
