CWRU Baseball Drops UAA Game to Wash U.

Box Score

The Case Western Reserve University Spartans dropped their second-straight game at the 2016 University Athletic Association Championships, falling 13-2 in seven innings to the Washington University (Mo.) Bears on Thursday afternoon in Sanford, Florida.

With the loss, the Spartans dropped to 6-6 overall and fell a game behind the Bears in the UAA standings with a 3-2 conference mark.  Washington improved to 10-3 overall and to 4-1 in UAA play, and could clinch at least a share of the UAA Championship with a win over Emory on Friday and a CWRU loss.

Wash U. jumped on the board with a run in the first inning, but starter Liam Killingstad was able to get out of a one-out bases loaded jam by inducing a 4-6-3 double play.  However, Bears starter Brad Margolin was able to keep Case Western Reserve off the board, and Wash U. extended its lead with four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth, taking a 10-0 lead.

The Spartans got on the board in the seventh on a solo home run from freshman Tyler Wypiszenski, the first of his career.  Two batters later, junior Tony Damiano hit another solo shot over the wall in left, his second of the season, cutting the lead to 10-2.  The Bears would score three in the bottom of the inning though, ending the game early due to the 10-run rule.

Including the home run, Damiano finished the game two-for-two at the plate.

Margolin went the distance for the Bears, earning the complete-game win to improve to 3-1 on the year.  Killingstad took the loss for the Spartans, falling to 0-1.

The Spartans will look to bounce back on Friday, when the team takes on Brandeis University at 11:00 a.m. at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium.
