CWRU Baseball Swept by #15/16 Shenandoah to Open Campaign

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Case Western Reserve University baseball team was swept in a season-opening doubleheader by nationally 15th/16th ranked Shenandoah University on Saturday in Winchester, Virginia, falling 14-0 in the opening game and dropping a 4-2 decision in the second contest.

The Spartans dropped to 0-2 on the season with the pair of losses, while Shenandoah improved to 2-0.

After allowing a run in the second, the Hornets opened a 5-0 lead with a four run second inning.  With Case Western Reserve unable to string together anything offensively, Shenandoah continued to extend its lead throughout the game, en route to the win.

Starter Neal Krentz took the loss for the Spartans, falling to 0-1 on the year.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second game, senior Zack Tobias singled in a pair of runs with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the seventh inning.  However, Shenandoah scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good.

Freshman Mark Gross, making his collegiate debut, started and threw 6.1 strong innings, allowing four runs on event hits in the loss.

The Spartans will wrap-up their season-opening series against Shenandoah at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
