Spartans End Season with Loss to Rochester in UAA Volleyball Championship Fifth Place Match

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team fell by a score of 3-0 to the University of Rochester in the fifth place match at the 2016 University Athletic Association Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Field House.

The Spartans conclude the season at 21-10. The program has produced eight winning seasons in the past nine years.

Rochester (24-11) edged the Spartans by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 26-24.

CWRU led early in the first half after sophomore defensive specialist Emily Wolfenbarger's service ace that gave the Spartans a 7-5 advantage. The Yellowjackets rallied back to go on a 15-9 run to lead 20-16 after a kill from Alara Kocak. Rochester then went on to score five of the final seven points to win the set 25-18.

The Spartans came out strong in the second set by leading 15-9 after a service ace by freshman defensive specialist Christine Tamura. The Yellowjackets responded with a 16-8 run to close out the set with a 25-23 victory.

CWRU rallied from as many as six points down to lead 22-21 in the third thanks to a kill from freshman outside hitter Brianna Lemon. Rochester answered, however, with five of the final seven points including a clinching kill by Kocak.

Statistically, Lemon led the Spartan attack with 13 kills, while freshman middle hitter Haley Sims contributed seven. Sophomore Shannon Carroll paced the offense with 21 assists.

Defensively, Tamura and sophomore libero Karina Bondelid led the Spartans with 12 and nine digs, respectively. Senior middle hitter Kayla Pfaff led in blocks with two block assists

Two Yellowjackets reached double-digits in kills, including Kocak with 11 and Clara Martinez with 10. Aimee Kohler set the Rochester offense with 33 assists, and Meghan Connor led on defense with 13 digs.
