Box Score The Case Western Reserve University women's volleyball team swept the No. 18 Purple Raiders of the University of Mount Union in straight sets 3-0 (27-25,25-16,25-18) on Wednesday night in Horsburgh Gymnasium.
The Spartans increase their best start of any season under Head Coach Karen Farrell, advancing to 10-0 overall. Case Western Reserve has now won seven straight matches by a 3-0 score, and eight overall through its first ten matches this season.
The Spartans were led on the attack by senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart who tallied 14 kills, 11 digs and a service ace. Junior outside hitter Marian Barton added nine kills and two block assists, while senior middle hitter Haley Kauffman added seven kills and four block assists. Senior libero Katie Best recorded 21 digs for the Spartans against a tough attack from the Purple Raiders. Freshman setter Shannon Carroll added 36 assists, 11 digs and two block assists.
In the first set, the Spartans led by as many as six points, twice, at 7-1 after a kill from Bogart and 9-3 after a Purple Raider attack error. Mount Union fought back and took a 25-24 lead before the Spartans reeled off the final three points to win the set, including a key kill by Barton.
After splitting the first 10 points of the second set, the Spartans went on a 9-1 run to take a 14-6 lead behind four kills from Kauffman. After the Purple Raiders closed the gap to five points, 20-15, CWRU scored five of the final six points with senior right-side hitter Dani Witri finishing the set with a kill.
After tying the score early twice in the third set, the Spartans took the lead and never looked back. The Spartans carried the advantage in kills, 16-9, as Barton finished the set with a kill for the 25-18 win.
The Spartans will take a week break and return to action next Wednesday night, September 23 back in Horsburgh Gymnasium to take on Baldwin Wallace University at 7:00 p.m.
