ATLANTA – A day after winning the 500-yard freestyle in school-record time, Case Western Reserve University freshman Drew Hamilton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) tied for second and set another school record in the 400 individual medley on day three of the 2015 University Athletic Association Championship at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center.
The Spartans rank sixth of eight teams competing with 555.5 points. Host and No. 3 nationally ranked Emory University and No. 10 University of Chicago are tied for the lead with 1,054 each. New York University (955) has moved into third.
Hamilton swam a 4:00.84 during morning prelims then bettered his mark during finals as he touched the wall in 3:58.77. Sophomore Phillip Kang of New York University placed just ahead of Hamilton in 3:57.64, while Emory freshman Chandler Lichtefeld also finished in 3:58.77.
Hamilton previously set the school record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:04.80 back in early December.
Reaching the podium for a second time on the night, Hamilton swam lead off for the runner-up 800 free relay team. Junior Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior), freshman Oliver Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and senior Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) joined Hamilton in posting a school-record time of 6:45.22.
In the 3-meter dive, junior Connor Farrell (Bedord Corners, N.Y./Fox Lane) placed fifth with a score of 489.50. On the 1-meter board Wednesday, Farrell was fourth.
The team's other top eight finish came in the 200 medley relay as seniors Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) and Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) along with sophomore Daniel Primachenko (Studio City, Calif./The Buckley School) finished with a seventh-place time of 1:33.56
The Spartans wrap the weekend tomorrow (Saturday, February 14) with 10:00 a.m. prelims and 5:30 p.m. finals.
