Spartan Volleyball To Play for Third Place After Day One of the UAA Championship

The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team, opened the 2015 University Athletic Association Championships on Friday with a win over the University of Rochester (N.Y.) in the conference quarterfinals, before falling against No. 3 Washington University (Mo.) in the semifinal round.

The Spartans will hope to conclude their regular season with a victory in the third place match on Saturday, November 7 at 10:00 a.m. against the University of Chicago.  LIVE STATS and VIDEO will be available for Saturday's match.

In the quarterfinals, the Spartans defeated Rochester 3-0 with scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-11. 

CWRU was paced by senior middle hitter Haley Kauffman who recorded 14 kills to earn a .500 hitting percentage. Also in double-digits, junior outside hitter Marian Barton tallied 12 kills for a .320 hitting percentage throughout the match. Senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart finished seven attacks and also added 12 digs. Freshman setter Shannon Carroll turned in a team-high 35 assists and also upped 11 attacks. Defensively, senior libero Katie Best contributed 17 digs to the Spartans total, while freshman defensive specialist Karina Bondelid added 11.

With the 12 digs in the match, Bogart surpassed the 1,000-dig mark for her career. She became just the fifth Spartan in program history with both 1,000 career kills and digs. 

The Spartans dropped three straight to the Bears with scores of 25-16, 25-23 and 25-18.

Against Wash. U., CWRU was led by Barton who recorded nine kills and Bogart who contributed eight kills and a team-high 13 digs. Carroll again led the team with 21 assists, while also adding 12 digs and five kills. Bondelid and Best each tallied eight digs, while freshman defensive specialist Andrea Lu upped seven in the match.
