Spartans Beat Otterbein in Five, Fall to Marietta in Three

MARIETTA, Ohio – Junior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) totaled 20 kills and 31 digs as the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team split a pair of matches with Marietta College and Otterbein University at the BSN River City Tournament on Saturday at Ban Johnson Arena. The Spartans outlasted Otterbein in five but fell to the host Pioneers in three.

The Spartans move to 10-5 headed into conference play.

In a thriller against Otterbein (7-9), the Spartans had to rally from a set down to eventually win by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 21-25, 25-22 and 15-13. Bogart posted her second double-double (kills/digs) in as many matches and seventh career.

The junior captain led the attack with a season-high 13 kills, while junior middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) and sophomore right side hitter Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) added nine apiece. Sophomore Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and freshman Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) split the setting duties with 22 and 20 assists, respectively.

In addition to Bogart with 18 digs defensively, sophomore libero Kristen Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) racked up a career-high 30. Junior outside hitter Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) added 17 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Kayla Pfaff (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) posted five total blocks (two solo/three assists).  

Against Marietta (6-11), the Spartans fell in straight sets, 25-17, 27-25 and 25-18. In the final set, CWRU trailed 18-17 before Marietta won seven of the final eight points for the three-set victory. Bogart again led the Spartans with seven kills, while Mitchell added 21 digs. 

The Spartans next travel to Atlanta for the first of two University Athletic Association Round Robins on Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5. The team opens the weekend against host and No. 3 nationally ranked Emory University at 12:00 p.m. and Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m.
