Box Score CLEVELAND – Senior forward Caitlyn McGillis (Fraser, Mich./Regina) scored her first goal of the season with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team salvaged a 1-1 tie against Centre College (Ky.) on Sunday afternoon at DiSanto Field.
The Spartans move to 3-1-1, while the Colonels sit at 4-1-1. Centre had defeated CWRU in each of the last two seasons.
The match went scoreless until the 59th minute when Centre's Katie Upton redirected a pass by Anne Mitchell into the Spartan net. Then, in the 82nd minute, sophomore midfielder Amy Lindberg (Farmington Hills, Mich./Harrison) set up the equalizer with a long shot that ricocheted off of the crossbar. McGillis found the rebound and buried the game-tying goal.
CWRU had several additional scoring chances earlier in the match but could not convert. In the 23rd minute, senior forward Jessie Sabers (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) gained control of a lead pass deep in Centre territory. After sidestepping a defender, Sabers sent a cross to sophomore forward Alexa Williams (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) on the left side of the box. Williams' subsequent header attempt flew just over the crossbar.
With seven minutes remaining in the first half, Williams had another scoring chance denied after a key defensive play by Centre's Shelby Ratcliff. Williams launched a shot that deflected off of Centre goalkeeper Olivia Alford and bounced towards the net. However, Ratcliff was in position to block the shot and cleared the attempt to keep the contest deadlocked.
Just after halftime, from nearly 30 yards out, McGillis hammered a shot that eluded the Centre keeper, but bounced off the crossbar.
Senior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) made five saves for the Spartans, including a point-blank stop on Centre's Alex Combs midway through the second half.
Olivia Alford stopped four shots for the Colonels.
CWRU will be back in action on Wednesday, September 17, against Baldwin Wallace University at 7:30 p.m. at DiSanto Field.
