Spartans Conclude Weekend with Split at Otterbein Classic; Best Named to All-Tournament Team

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team concluded the opening weekend of the 2014 season by splitting a pair of Saturday matches at the Otterbein Classic. The Spartans dropped the morning contest against Maryville College (Tenn.), 3-1, but rebounded to win their afternoon match against Kenyon College, 3-0. 

CWRU moves to 2-2 for the young season and will return home for four matches in two days at next weekend's Marcia French Memorial Invitational.

For her performance over the weekend, junior libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) was named to the All-Tournament Team with 70 digs in a total of 16 sets played.

Against Maryville (3-0), the Spartans lost by scores of 16-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 23-25. Freshman outside hitter Ganiru Anunike (Galena, Ohio/Olentangy) and sophomore outside hitter Isabelle Wagner (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake) led the squad with 10 kills apiece. Anunike committed just one attack error in 23 attempts (.391) and led the team with three service aces. Freshman Jessica Justice (St. Augustine, Fla.,/St. Augustine) and junior Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) paced the offense 22 and 17 assists, respectively. On defense, Best led the team with 23 digs, while senior outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) added 10.

In their second match of the day, the Spartans topped Kenyon (0-4) in straight sets (25-5, 25-17, 25-14). This time, Wagner led the team in kills with nine, hitting at a .304 clip. After Wagner, junior right side hitter Danielle Witri (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood) registered seven kills, while sophomore outside hitter Kenya Moyers (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and junior middle hitter Haley Kauffman (Hartville, Ohio/Lake) were each credited with five. Marks accumulated a team-high 15 assists. Defensively, sophomore specialist Kayla Petro (Columbia Station, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) posted 10 digs.

The Spartans co-host the 2014 Marcia French Memorial Invitational on September 5-6 at the Veale Center.  This coming Friday, they will face the University of Pittsburgh-Bradford at 4:00 p.m. and Muskingum University at 8:00 p.m.
