No. 21 Spartan Baseball Falls at JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The No. 21 nationally ranked Case Western Reserve University baseball team fell at local-rival John Carroll University, 10-3, on Thursday afternoon at Schweickert Field.

The Spartans drop to 19-7, while the Blue Streaks improve to 15-7 as the two schools have split their two meetings this season.

For the game, senior shortstop Andrew Frey (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while sophomore designated hitter Noah Sherman (Kensington, Md./Georgetown Preparatory) homered and was hit by a pitch twice.

John Carroll scored two in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth before the Spartans scored their three runs in the seventh. With the home lead at 6-3, JCU added three insurance scores in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth.

The Blue Streaks' second inning was capped by a two-run double from David Crowley, and the home third was highlighted by a two-run homer from Chet Lauer. The Spartans got on the board with a solo homer from Sherman before sophomore first baseman Zack Tobias (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and Frey added RBI singles.

On the mound, sophomore Neal Krentz (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) suffered his first loss of the season (2-1) in three innings pitched.

Jimmy Spagna (1-1) threw six shutout frames for the Blue Streaks with a pair of strikeouts.

Offensively, Bobby Sabatino was 3-for-4 for JCU, while Spagna went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.

The Spartans open up a five-game homestand versus Washington & Jefferson College (Pa.) this Saturday, April 12 with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Nobby's Ballpark. The team also hosts Bethany College (W. Va.) on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as part of Alumni Weekend.
