WOOSTER, Ohio – Freshman Drew Hamilton (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin) broke a 12-year old school record in the 500-yard freestyle, and the four-time defending champion Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team ranks first after day one of the Wooster Invitational at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.
The CWRU men's team has won the invitational in each of its four previous seasons under Head Coach Doug Milliken. Through seven events, the Spartans have 419.5 points. Ohio Northern University (391) and Division II Malone University (370.5) rank second and third, respectively.
Hamilton swam an NCAA 'B' cut time of 4:34.73 to place second in the 24-competitor field. The previous school record of 4:35.57 was set in 2002 by former All-American Jon Gellin.
Fellow freshman Aaron Pang (Troy, Mich./Troy) turned in the team's other top five individual finish with a fourth-place mark of 1:56.64 in the 200 individual medley.
In the opening men's event of the night, the 200 freestyle relay, the Spartans 'A' team placed third with a time of 1:24.57. Senior co-captain Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) led off in front of juniors Alec David (Somerdale, N.J./Triton Regional), Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior) and Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West).
Day two (Friday, December 5) of the invite is set for 10:00 a.m. prelims and 6:00 p.m. finals. Diving events will be held at The College of Wooster's Timken Natatorium.
