Box Score CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University football team saw its 2014 campaign conclude with a 20-10 loss to the University of Chicago on a chilly Seniors' Day at DiSanto Field.
The Spartans end the year at 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the University Athletic Association. The team wrapped up its first season as affiliate members of the Presidents' Athletic Conference last weekend with a mark of 3-5.
Chicago (8-1, 3-0 UAA) wins its first UAA Championship since 2010.
The Spartans were limited to 212 yards of total offense and turned the ball over five times (three fumbles/two interceptions).
All but six of the visitor's points came off of Spartan turnovers, and it was a pair of CWRU miscues that led to a 10-0 Chicago lead in the first quarter. Three plays after a fumbled punt return at the home 15, the Maroons found the endzone on a six-yard run by Zak Ross-Nash at the 9:05 mark. A botched snap on a CWRU punt four drives later set up Karol Kurzydlowski for a 34-yard field goal at 1:05.
The Spartans got on the board at 10:30 of the second quarter with a 32-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Mitch Hopkins (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Orange) then picked up an impact play on defense when freshman safety Cody Calhoun (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) made a diving interception in the home endzone at 7:02.
However, the ensuing CWRU drive resulted in a fumble near midfield that was returned 49 yards for a score by Vincent Beltrano at 5:19.
The 17-3 lead held into halftime as CWRU turned the ball over three times in the first half.
After most of the third quarter went scoreless, the Spartans finally found the endzone at 3:03 on an 11-yard run by senior running back Manny Sicre (Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Preparatory).
The next CWRU drive resulted in a fumble at the home 32, but the Maroons were later stopped thanks to a 4th-and-1 tackle at the 12 by junior linebacker Gavin Sandidge (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) with 8:06 left to play.
The Spartans then drove out to their own 40 before a turnover on downs led to a game-clinching 34-yard field goal from Kurzydlowski with 40 seconds remaining in the contest.
For the game, Chicago led in time of possession, 36:20 to 23:40.
Individually for the Spartans, Sandidge racked up a game-high 14 tackles.
