CLEVELAND – The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming and diving team opened its 2014-15 season with a 187-105 loss to University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon at Veale Natatorium.
Junior Connor Farrell (Bedord Corners, N.Y./Fox Lane) highlighted the day with wins in both diving events, posting NCAA Regional qualifying scores of 291.25 in the 1-meter event and 291.75 in the 3-meter.
Other individual winners for the Spartans included freshman Aaron Pang (Troy, Mich./Troy) and senior Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West). Pang picked up his first collegiate victory with a time of 4:11.85 in the 400-yard individual medley. Kerbel won the 50 freestyle, outsprinting the field in 21.94.
Kerbel was also instrumental in the team's final victory of the day, as the Spartans earned a first-place finish in the 200 free relay. Junior Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior), junior Alec David (Somerdale, N.J./Triton Regional), Kerbel, and senior co-captain Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) finished in a time of 1:27.44.
The Spartans return to action next Saturday, November 1 versus John Carroll University at Veale Natatorium. Action is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
