Box Score BEREA, Ohio – A goal in the 81st minute was the difference as the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell to cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University, 2-1, on Wednesday evening at The George Finnie Stadium.
The Spartans (3-3) slip to the .500 mark with a second loss in a row and will look to get back on track this Saturday, September 21 at Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m. in Gambier.
With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-1.
The first half didn't see many scoring threats, but BW took advantage of its best opportunity late in the period when Liz Helser deflected a corner kick by Kayla Losco into the back of the net at the 43:15 mark.
Undaunted, the Spartans came out of halftime and quickly tied the match at 51:48 as senior midfielder Rachel Bourque (Newton, N.H./Central Catholic) took a cross from senior defender Katie Chapin (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh Academy) and drilled a shot high past the BW goalkeeper for her first score of the season. The assist was the first career for Chapin.
Case looked to take the lead later in the 71st minute, but a free kick by senior forward Leah Levey (Columbus, Ohio/Bexley) floated just high of the home net.
After sustaining the Case attack, the Yellow Jackets countered and went back on top for good when Kari Trivisonno collected a free kick by Losco and sent the game winner into the net with 9:02 remaining on the clock.
The Spartans had one last shot with under a minute left, but a long shot by sophomore midfielder Kate Dolansky (Brecksville, Ohio/Hathaway Brown) sailed high.
For the match, the Spartans outshot the Yellow Jackets, 17-12, but the hosts held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
In net, junior goalkeeper Abbey Smith (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) recorded four saves. BW's Emily Tallmadge posted six.
Following Saturday's match at Kenyon, the Spartans return home for a two-match home stand that begins on Tuesday, Sept. 24 versus Ohio Northern University.
