Spartan Softball Splits to Open Action at NTC Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. – Back in action for the first time in nearly two weeks, the Case Western Reserve University softball team split a pair of games to open action at the National Training Center Games on Friday at the NTC Complex.

The Spartans (2-3) lost the opening game of the day, 6-5, to No. 14 nationally-ranked Moravian College (Pa.), but rebounded with a 6-1 victory versus Adrian College (Mich.).

Versus the Greyhounds (8-1), the Spartans jumped on top 3-0 in the top of the third thanks to a two-run double by freshman first baseman Erin Dreger (Alliance, Ohio/Alliance) and an RBI double by junior shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida).

The lead held until the bottom of the fifth when Moravian scored four times via four RBI singles from Brook Kowal, Dior George, Miranda Sergas and Alyssa Fegley. The Greyhounds then added a pair of insurance scores in the sixth when George hit an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch. The Spartans threatened in the seventh after a two-run double from junior catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor), but Fegely was able to record the final two outs to secure the win.

On the mound, sophomore Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) threw all six innings and allowed six earned runs in the loss. Fegely picked up the win for Moravian despite allowing 14 hits in seven innings.

For the game, sophomore second baseman Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) and Lein were each 3-for-4 with a run for the Spartans. Dreger and Amy Taylor both went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Versus the Bulldogs (3-7), the Spartans countered an unearned run in the top of the first with five in their half of the inning. Lein and sophomore rightfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity) each hit RBI singles during the rally. Roberts provided another RBI with a double in the second to take the score to 6-1.

O'Brien was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases to complete a 5-for-7 day at the dish.

Rebecca Taylor logged four innings on the mound with six strikeouts to pick up the win, while freshman Rebecca Molnar (Independence, Ohio/Independence) fanned three in three scoreless innings of relief for her first career save.

The Spartans conclude play at the NTC Games tomorrow evening versus Salve Regina University (R.I.) at 5:00 p.m. and St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) at 7:00 p.m.
