Spartans Split on Day One of UAA Volleyball Championship; Set to Play NYU for Fifth Place Tomorrow

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team was swept by No. 6 nationally ranked Emory University (Ga.) but bounced back to sweep host Brandeis University on day one of the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship at Shapiro Gymnasium.

By virtue of the win versus Brandeis (10-24, 1-6), the Spartans (16-16, 2-5 UAA) advance to tomorrow's fifth-place match versus New York University at 10:00 a.m.

Emory (30-3, 5-2 UAA) won in straight sets later in the day against No. 8 Washington University in St. Louis to advance to the championship match tomorrow against the University of Chicago at 1:00 p.m. The Eagles defeated the Spartans by scores of 25-23, 25-10 and 25-23. The first and third sets were hotly contested, specifically with the score tied at 20 in the first.

Despite the loss, sophomore outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) led the Spartan attack with 10 kills. Freshman Lauren Gurd (Farmington Hills, Mich./Detroit Country Day) and sophomore Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) paced the offense with 16 and 12 assists, respectively. Defensively, Bogart and sophomore libero Katie Best (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) each tallied nine digs.

The Eagles were led by Leah Jacobs with 16 kills and Sydney Miles with 43 assists.

In the win against Brandeis, the Spartans were led by freshman right-side hitter Marian Barton (Custer Park, Ill./Reed-Custer) with nine kills and Bogart with eight more. Once again, Gurd and Marks orchestrated the Case attack with 14 assists apiece.

On the defensive side, Case was led by Best and freshman specialist Kristen Mitchell (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), who each recorded 18 digs. Junior middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) had a team-best four blocks.

The Judges were led by Si-Si Hensley and Liz Hood with nine and eight kills, respectively.
