Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The undefeated Case Western Reserve University volleyball team made it two tournament championships in as many weeks with a pair of victories on the final day of the 14th Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Horsburgh Gymnasium. The Spartans swept both The College of Wooster and Franciscan University, while sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) was named to the All-Tournament team.
Now at 8-0, the Spartans are off to the best start in program history with 4-0 performances this weekend and at last week's Green Hornet Invitational in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The team also has an outstanding 24-2 sets record.
Versus Wooster (4-3), the Spartans battled to claim the first two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-22 before completing the sweep via a 25-10 count in the third. Freshman outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) led the attack with 12 kills, while Southard totaled nine. Senior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the offense with 31 assists, while senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the defense with 26 digs.
Versus Franciscan (5-4), the Spartans won by scores of 25-7, 25-14 and 25-19. Freshman outside hitter Kayla Petro (Columbia Station, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) posted six kills, while Southard checked in with five. For the weekend, Southard totaled 45 kills.
Freeman once again set the offense with 18 assists, giving her 2,903 for her career. The senior is now just seven away from tying Susan Eungard (1996-00) for the most in program history.
On the defensive side, Gulasey was once again the leader with 23 digs.
The Spartans will face their biggest test to date this Wednesday, September 12 at No. 22 nationally-ranked University of Mount Union at 7:00 p.m. in Alliance.
