Box Score CHICAGO – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team was unable to duplicate its upset magic from two years ago and was swept by No. 1 nationally-ranked Washington University (Mo.) in the final match of the 2012 University Athletic Association Round Robin #1 at the Ratner Center. The Spartans won the last time the Bears were ranked No. 1 in 2010.
The Spartans (14-4 overall, 2-1 UAA) have the next four days off from competition before returning to action at the Blue Devil Invitational in Fredonia, New York next Friday and Saturday, October 5-6.
The Bears (16-1, 3-0 UAA) won via scores of 25-15, 25-17 and 25-21 on Sunday. The Spartans were held to only 26 kills with freshman outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) totaling a team-high nine. Senior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) recorded 14 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) totaled 15 digs, while sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) contributed a block solo and a pair of block assists.
The Spartans open next weekend in Fredonia versus the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m. and Buffalo State University (N.Y.) at 8:00 p.m.
