Box Score 2 MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team placed runner-up following a 1-1 performance on the final day of the 2012 Allegheny College Gator Invitational at the David V. Wise Center. The Spartans defeated Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, by a count of 3-1, then fell to tourney champion, Thiel College (Pa.), 3-2. For her efforts over the weekend, freshman outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Despite falling once on the weekend, the Spartans (11-2) continue the best start in program history and have a pair of tournament titles in addition to this weekend's runner-up finish.
Versus Penn State Behrend (5-5), the Spartans won by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 21-15 and 25-12. Bogart led the offensive attack with 15 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) tallied 13. Senior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the offense with 31 assists, and freshman Robyn Marks (Waterford, Mich./Waterford Mott) dished out a career-best 21. On defense, senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the way with 24 digs.
Versus Thiel (7-4), the Spartans lost by counts of 24-26, 27-25, 25-21, 19-25 and 13-15. Bogart hit a career high for kills with 21, while Southard recorded 16. Freeman was the main setter with 45 assists, and Gulasey led six players in double-figures with 27 digs.
The Spartans return to action with a single match at The College of Wooster on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m. in Wooster, Ohio.
