The Spartans dropped a pair of games during a doubleheader sweep at La Roche College (Pa.) yesterday in Pittsburgh by scores of 9-6 and 5-3. In game one, junior first baseman Brett Ossola hit his second homerun of the spring, For the season, Ossola leads the team with a .333 batting average to go along with two homeruns, 26 RBI, eight doubles and 21 runs scored. Junior centerfielder Paul Pakan and senior leftfielder Sam Alexander both sport a .327 batting average. Pakan leads the team in hits (55) and homeruns (7). Alexander has three homers and a team-high 35 RBI. Senior catcher Peter Zak is a .321 batter with four homers, a team-high 12 doubles and 23 RBI this spring. Freshman utility player Andrew Gronski enters today's season finale batting .308 with three homers, 16 RBI and a team-best 21 walks drawn, while sophomore infielder Andrew Frey sports a .316 average. Junior left-handed pitchers Jarrett Gish and Jamie Hora have led the Spartan pitching staff. Overall, Gish is 6-2 with a 3.78 ERA to go along with 59 strikeouts against just 10 walks, while Hora is a perfect 8-0 with a 4.16 ERA and 51 Ks. Freshman right-hander Edward Abramson checks in at 4-2 with a 3.92 ERA and 32 Ks in 43.2 innings. Out of the bullpen, sophomore RHP Jose Vega has a team-high nine saves to go along with a 3.78 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.
The Blue Streaks have lost three of their last four including a doubleheader sweep versus Heidelberg University yesterday afternoon in Ohio Athletic Conference action in Tiffin. Sophomore infielder/outfielder Mitchell Herringshaw leads John Carroll with a .366 batting average to go along with team-highs in runs scored (28), homeruns (2) and hits (48) to go along with a team-high tying seven stolen bases, 22 RBI, six doubles and 10 walks. Junior outfielder Ryan Konsler possesses a .330 average and paces JCU with 10 doubles, two triples and 23 RBI to go along with a homer and 12 walks. Senior first baseman Tim Hickey is hitting .323 with a team-best tying 14 walks along with a homer and 15 RBI, while a trio of Blue Streaks are also hitting the ball over a .300 clip. Sophomore Jimmy Spagna leads the JCU pitching staff in starts (11) with a 3-5 record and 3.65 ERA to go along with 30 strikeouts in a team-best 61.2 innings of work. Freshman Tyler Ferretti is 3-3 in 34.0 innings pitched. Additionally, sophomore Anthony Libertini (3-2, 4.66 ERA) and freshman Andrew Doring (1-1, 4.56 ERA) have each logged more than six starts individually.
