Spartans Look to Open April Home Slate on Positive Note Versus Denison; Follow with Live Stats

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team (16-10 overall) looks to open the April home slate on a positive note with a single nine-inning game versus Denison University (5-18 overall) on Tuesday, April 3 at Nobby's Ballpark. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

The Spartans enter this afternoon's game with four wins in the last six contests. Junior Paul Pakan leads the team and ranks in the top-five in the UAA with a .378 batting average to go along with three homers and 17 RBI. The centerfielder also leads the team in hits (37) and slugging percentage (.551). Senior left fielder Sam Alexander hit a three-run homer Sunday at Allegheny, giving him a team-best 20 RBI and tying him with Pakan for team-high honors in round-trippers with three. Senior catcher Peter Zak is hitting over the .400 clip (7-of-17) with three doubles and four RBI since returning from the team's spring break trip in Florida. Junior left-handed pitcher Jarrett Gish hasn't allowed a run in three-consecutive outings spanning 20 innings. During that stretch, he has collected 19 strikeouts. In addition, the southpaw has thrown 24.2 consecutive scoreless frames dating back to March 15.

The Big Red has lost 11-straight, including a quartet of setbacks to open conference play versus No. 18-nationally ranked DePauw University this past weekend. Freshman Ryan Mulligan paces Denison with a .368 batting average, while senior Evan Nicholson is hitting .325 with seven RBI and a team-best six stolen bases. Junior Danny Kraus is hitting .310 with two doubles, a triple, four steals and six walks, while senior Andrew Mahle leads the Big Red offensively with 14 RBI to go along with a .299 batting average. Tim Duxbury, Tyler Vaske and Connor Murphy each have started five games on the mound. Duxbury sports a 2.83 ERA, a 2-3 record and ranks second on the staff in strikeouts (26) and innings (35), while Vaske has posted team-bests in strikeouts (31) and innings (35.1) and is tied with Murphy with two complete games.
