Spartans Host Muskingum for Seniors' Day at Progressive Field; Follow with Live Stats

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team (22-12-1 overall) celebrates Seniors' Day when it hosts Muskingum University (14-15 overall) for a single nine-inning game on Thursday, April 19 at Progressive Field, the home of Major League Baseball's Cleveland Indians. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Prior to the contest, CWRU will honor its nine baseball senior student-athletes.

For the season, junior first baseman Brett Ossola leads the team with a .355 batting average to go along with a homer and 22 RBI, while senior catcher Peter Zak, the reigning UAA Hitter of the Week, is a .349 batter, with a .400 clip (11-for-28), two homers, four doubles and seven RBI during the last 11 games. Junior centerfielder Paul Pakan has a .338 batting average and leads the team in hits (46), homers (5) and total bases (73). Senior leftfielder Sam Alexander is a .328 hitter with three homers and a team-high 30 RBI. Freshman utility player Andrew Gronski has also come on at the plate of late, batting .364 with three homers, 11 runs scored and seven RBI over the last 10 contests.

Junior left-handed pitchers Jarrett Gish and Jamie Hora continue to lead the Spartan pitching staff. Overall, Gish recorded the victory yesterday improving to 6-1 and lowered his ERA to 3.20 to go along with a staff-best 51 strikeouts against just seven walks, while Hora is a perfect 7-0 for the spring with a 3.61 ERA and 46 Ks. Freshman righthander Edward Abramson checks in at 3-2 with a 2.58 ERA and 31 Ks in 38.1 innings. Out of the bullpen, sophomore RHP Jose Vega has a team-high eight saves to go along with a 5.11 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 12.1 innings, while classmate Josh Suvak picked up his second save of the spring on Wednesday and owns a 1.20 ERA with seven strikeouts in 15.0 innings.

The Fighting Muskies have won three of their last five games but dropped a pair of one-run decisions (4-3, 2-1) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with John Carroll University Tuesday afternoon in University Heights. Today's game at Progressive Field marks the first time in Muskingum baseball history the program has played in a Major League ballpark

Offensively, junior outfielder Darren Garrett leads Muskingum with a .387 batting average to go along with team-highs in hits (41), stolen bases (7-of-12), triples (2), and is tied with two others with 17 walks, while senior outfielder Alex Vaccaro and sophomore outfielder Michael Lynn each possess a .309 batting average. Vaccaro leads Muskingum with nine doubles, while each have recorded six stolen bases. Senior first baseman Colton Newell is hitting .293 with a team-best six homers and is tied with sophomore infielder Zach Siemon with a team-best 23 RBI. Of note, Siemon leads the team with nine hit-by-pitches.

Senior right-hander Todd Spadaro leads the Muskingum staff with a 2.30 ERA along with team-bests in wins (4-1), strikeouts (30) and complete games (3) in 43 innings pitched.

2012 SPARTAN SENIORS

#15 Jimmy Abed
Jimmy is a native of nearby Westlake, Ohio and a product of Westlake High School. Despite missing significant time due to injury, he will earn his fourth varsity letter this spring as a member of the Spartan outfield. In 128 career games and 95 starts, Jimmy has 79 hits, 82 runs scored, nine doubles, two triples, three homers, 36 RBI and 41 stolen bases. He ranks fifth all-time in school history in steals. A biology (pre-dental) major, Jimmy is the son of Amin and Aziza Abed.

#17 Sam Alexander
Sam is a native of Alexandria, Virginia and a product of T.C. Williams High School. He will earn his fourth varsity letter this spring as a four-year starter with the last two seasons in the outfield. In 152 career games and 136 starts, Sam is a career .332 hitter. He is third in program history with 179 hits and 126 RBI, fourth with 254 total bases, tied for fourth in starts, tied for fifth with 36 doubles, seventh with 97 runs scored and tied for seventh with nine homers. Last season, he was named second-team American Baseball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region, second-team All-UAA, UAA Championship All-Tournament Team, and was tabbed as the Association's Hitter of the Week in back-to-back weeks. He also opened his junior campaign with a career-best 29-game hitting streak. This season, he is batting .328 with three homers and a team-high 30 RBI. A biomedical engineering major, Sam is the son of Brian and Catherine Alexander.

#11 A.J. Boshinski
A.J is a native of Alpharetta, Georgia and a product of St. Pius X Catholic High School. He will earn his fourth varsity letter this season on the mound in 54 career appearances and 23 starts. In 148 innings pitched, A.J. is 9-8 with 131 strikeouts, and he ranks second all-time in program history in appearances. Last season, he was a perfect 4-0 on the mound in a team-high 16 appearances. An aerospace engineering major, A.J. is the son of Tom and Anne Boshinski.

#25 Zach Fry
Zach is a native of Colorado Springs, Colorado and a product of Air Academy High School. Returning for his senior season after missing all of last spring due to offseason arm surgery, he will graduate as a four-year letterwinner on the mound with 42 career games pitched. In 168 innings, Zach is 13-12 with 83 strikeouts and four complete games, and he ranks fourth in program history in career wins. In 2010, he pitched in 14 games with six starts posting a team-best 7-3 record with a 4.93 ERA in a team-high 49.1 innings of work. He also earned UAA Pitcher of the Week honors as a junior. A mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering double-major, Zach is the son of Michael and Amy Fry.

#3 John Lewandowski
John is a native of nearby Shaker Heights, Ohio and a product of St. Ignatius High School. John will earn his fourth varsity letter this spring and is a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree. John posted a career-best batting average of .320 during his sophomore senior, and he has earned Case School of Engineering Outstanding Sophomore and Junior Awards in each of the last two years. An engineering and economics double-major, John is the son of John and Amy Lewandowski.

#7 Bobby Marko
Bobby is native of nearby Lyndhurst, Ohio and a product of Brush High School. He will earn his fourth varsity letter this spring as a four-year starter at second base. In 152 career games and 145 starts, Bobby is a .279 hitter with five homeruns, 73 RBI, 22 doubles and 90 runs scored. He ranks fourth in school history with 495 at-bats, seventh with 68 walks and tied for seventh with seven triples. Earlier this season, Bobby was named to the UAA All-Tournament team after batting .375 during the league championship. A mechanical engineering major, Bobby is the son of Joe and Lisa Marko.

#13 Bradley Potter
Bradley is a native of Rochester, New York and a product of Gates-Chili High School. He will graduate as a four-year letterwinner on the mound with an 8-5 record and 58 strikeouts in 36 career outings and 102 innings pitched. Last season, Bradley turned in one of the team's key pitching performances with 7.2 innings in a victory versus Penn State-Altoona at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Earlier this season, he was named the UAA Pitcher of the Week after tossing a complete-game six-hitter to defeat Ohio Wesleyan University. A three-time UAA All-Academic selection, Bradley boasts a perfect 4.0 grade point average as a chemical engineering and materials science engineering double-major. He is the son of Rodney and Diane Parke-Potter.

#27 Cory Smith
Cory is a native of nearby Chagrin Falls, Ohio and a product of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School. He will graduate as a four-year letterwinner on the mound with 27 appearances and nine games started despite being hampered with injuries the past two springs. He has amassed 39 strikeouts in 60.2 innings pitched and has earned the start today versus Muskingum. Earlier this spring, he notched his first career save in a victory versus Bethany College (W. Va.). An accounting major, Cory is the son of Bob and Karen Smith.

#28 Peter Zak
Peter is a native of Brookline, Massachusetts and a product of Brookline High School. He will earn his fourth varsity letter at catcher this spring as a career .290 hitter with eight homers, 38 RBI and 31 runs scored in 85 games played. This season, he ranks second on the team with a .349 batting average and paces the team with 10 doubles to go with three homers and 18 RBI. A season ago, he hit the game-winning pinch-hit grandslam in the top of the ninth inning during the NCAA Mideast Regional opener versus Adrian College (Mich.). Peter is also the reigning UAA Hitter of the Week. A chemistry major, Peter is the son of Mark and Helen Zak.
