Taylor Records Another Shutout, Hunger Solid in Game Two as Spartans Sweep Sunday Doubleheader at Kenyon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GAMBIER, Ohio – Freshman pitchers Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) and Christina Hunger (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) continued their dominant pitching run as the Case Western Reserve University softball team stretched its win streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep at Kenyon College on Sunday afternoon at KC Softball Complex. The Spartans won the opener, 8-0 in five innings, and took the nightcap, 6-1.

The Spartans improve to 12-7 overall and return to action with a home doubleheader on Tuesday, March 27 versus Otterbein University at 3:30 p.m. at Mather Park in Cleveland. With the losses, Kenyon drops to 8-10.

Taylor (9-7) shut the Ladies out for five innings in game one as the Spartan evoked the eight-run rule, while Hunger (3-0) held the hosts to just one run over seven frames in game two. During the team's six-game win streak, Taylor (21 innings) and Hunger (17 innings) have combined for an unbelievable 0.18 earned run average, 30 strikeouts and five shutouts while allowing only 31 hits and seven walks.

In game one, the Spartans struck early with three runs in the first. Sophomore catcher Amy Taylor (Brier, Wash./Inglemoor) hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) and senior designated player Ianna Wasser (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) hit a two-run double to left. Case added three more in the third with a two-run double by freshman outfielder Ashley Parello (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and an RBI double from freshman outfielder Gena Roberts (Miami, Fla./Palmer-Trinity). The Spartans also scored single runs in the fourth and fifth with Roberts hitting her second homer of the season to close the scoring.

On the mound, Rebecca Taylor surrendered just five hits and one walk while striking out five for her fourth shutout of the year.

At the plate, Roberts was 3-for-3 with three runs batted-in. Rebecca Taylor was 2-for-4 and senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) was 2-for-3.

In game two, Parello opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second. The Spartans added two in the second thanks to a Kenyon error and a Hunger sacrifice fly before scoring two more in the sixth on an error and another Parello RBI double. Another run scored in the seventh on a Kenyon error before the Ladies scored their lone run of the day in the bottom of the inning.

Hunger shut the Ladies out for the first six innings and allowed just one earned run overall on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Following Tuesday's twinbill with Otterbein, the Spartans take the short drive across town to play Baldwin-Wallace College on Thursday. Case then opens an eight-game home stand.
