Spartan Softball Swept by No. 4 Emory and Brandeis on Day Two of UAA Championship

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – A day after upsetting No. 23 nationally-ranked Washington University-St. Louis, the Case Western Reserve University softball team was swept in a pair of games on day two of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship at Seminole Field. The Spartans fell to No. 4 Emory University (Ga.), 7-2, and Brandeis University (Mass.), 7-5.

The Spartans (4-4, 1-2 UAA) aim to get back on track tomorrow morning versus the University of Rochester (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m.

In game one, Emory (20-1, 2-1 UAA) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a Case error and a two-run homer by Jessica Boni. The Spartans cut the deficit in half in the second when senior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, Ohio/Holy Name) hit a two-run homer of her own, but the Eagles took advantage of three more errors during their half of the inning and scored three more times to lead 7-2.

For the game, freshman infielder Molly O'Brien (Northbrook, Ill./Loyola) was 2-for-4.

On the mound, freshman Rebecca Taylor (Greensburg, Pa./Greater Latrobe) started and took the loss, allowing one earned run over three innings. Four Spartan errors in the game led to six unearned runs, and Taylor came out of the game for the first time all season. She had pitched the first 44 innings of the season.

Classmate Christina Hunger (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) threw the final three innings and did not allow a run while striking out a pair.

Amanda Kardys (4-0) came on in relief for Emory and threw 5.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Versus Brandeis (2-1, 2-1 UAA), the Spartans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first thanks to an RBI double by sophomore infielder Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) and a sacrifice fly by Taylor. The Judges came back with three in the top of the third with a homer by Brittany Grimm and RBI doubles from Marianne Specker and Melissa Nolan. The Spartans then tied the score in their half of the third as Lein walked and came around to score on a passed ball.

However, Brandeis moved back on top in the fifth with four runs on four hits and three Spartan errors.  Case had a shot to tie the score in the seventh after Hunger reached on an error that brought home Taylor and subsequently loaded the bases. Sophomore outfielder Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, Utah/Olympus) then walked to force home senior first baseman Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge), but Brandeis' Caroline Miller came in to pitch and slammed the door on the rally with a strikeout.

For the game, Lein was 2-for-3. On the mound, Taylor was roughed up in 4.1 innings before Hunger came on to throw 2.2 scoreless frames.

Grimm was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for Brandeis.

Following tomorrow's single game with Rochester, the Spartans play a Friday, March 16 doubleheader versus nationally-ranked Washington-St. Louis and Emory at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.
