CLEVELAND, Ohio – Sophomore Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) placed runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle, and the No. 14 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team ranks third of seven teams competing after day one of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship hosted by CWRU at Veale Natatorium.
Emory University (Ga.) is the leader with 597 points with two days of competition remaining. University of Chicago (Ill.) is second at 381, while Case Western Reserve is third at 370.5. Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) and New York University round out the top-five with 328 and 322 points, respectively.
Bailey's time of 20.97 seconds in the 50 free was just fourth-tenths of a second off of an NCAA B-Cut.
Bailey also swam the opening leg on Case's third-place 200 free relay team that finished third in 1:24.51. Sophomore Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor) and freshmen Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West) and Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) completed the All-UAA quartet.
In the 200 individual medley, Clyde turned in a school-record time of 1:53.88 during the morning prelims. The sophomore followed with a seventh-place finals time of 1:56.84 to finish one spot behind classmate Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) at 1:56.27.
In the 500 free, senior Sam Geiger (Westlake, Ohio/St. Edward) placed seventh with a time of 4:42.57. Haufler also captured seventh in the 50 free at 21.64.
In the final event of the night, the 400 medley relay, the Spartans placed fifth with freshman Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), Nickley, Haufler and Bailey touching the wall in 3:27.41.
Day three of the championship begins on Friday morning with 10:00 a.m. prelims. Women's three-meter diving will take place at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at William H. Johnson Natatorium in University Heights, while the swimming finals are slated for 6:00 p.m. at Veale.
