Box Score 2 FREDONIA, N.Y. – With a split during two matches on Saturday, the Case Western Reserve University volleyball team completed a 2-2 weekend at the Blue Devil Invitational hosted by Fredonia State University.
On day two, the Spartans fell in the opener to Nazareth College (Pa.) by scores of 25-20, 23-25, 25-19, 22-25 and 15-10. However, Case bounced back and blanked Fredonia State in straight sets by tallies of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-14.
In the first match versus Nazareth, the Spartans were led offensively by sophomore middle hitter Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) with 14 kills, while freshman outside hitter Carolyn Bogart (New Berlin, Wis./New Berlin Eisenhower) chipped in with nine. Senior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) finished with 24 assists.
Defensively, senior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) led the way with 21 digs, while Southard finished with six blocks.
Versus Fredonia State, the Spartans were once again led offensively by Southard with 10 kills, while Bogart ended up with eight. Freeman dished out 23 assists and produced five service aces, while Gulasey wrapped up her tournament with an 11-dig performance.
At the conclusion of action, Gulasey was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Spartans (16-6 overall, 2-1 University Athletic Association) are back in action next weekend when they head to Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) for the UAA Round Robin No. 2 on October 13-14. Case plays the hosts on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. followed by No. 6 nationally-ranked Emory University at 2:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Spartans will square off versus New York University at 12:00 p.m. and will conclude the quartet of matches versus No. 13 University of Chicago at 2:00 p.m.
