Box Score PITTSBURGH – Senior tri-captain and defender Maeve Goede (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) recorded her second goal of the season, but the Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team fell during University Athletic Association action by a 3-1 score to host No. 24 nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday at the CMU Soccer Field.
With the setback, Case falls to 7-4-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Association. The Spartans will look to get back on the winning path when they step out of UAA action for the final time this fall on Saturday, October 20 versus Kenyon College at 1:00 p.m. at Case Field.
With the victory, Carnegie Mellon improves to 9-1-2 and 3-1 in the UAA.
The first 45 minutes featured a trio of goals with the Tartans recording two of them. Carnegie Mellon got on the board first when Brianna Magill scored on a diagonal shot in the ninth minute.
However, the Spartans answered with a goal just under 13 minutes later when Goede headed in a ball off a free kick opportunity from freshman defender Kate Dolansky (Brecksville, Ohio/Hathaway Brown). The helper was Dolansky's first career.
The Tartans then took the lead for good, 2-1, in the 21st minute when Louisa Pendergrast scored in the 26th minute.
In the second half, Carnegie Mellon scored its third goal of the match in the 69th minute when Cecilia Zischkau tapped in a free ball.
Spartan freshman goalkeeper Megan Romelfanger (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) suffered the loss (4-2-2) in 90 minutes with a quartet of saves. Anna Albi also played the entire match for Carnegie Mellon and tallied two stops.
For the match, Carnegie Mellon held a 14-6 advantage in shots and a slight 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
