MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Competing for the first time in almost two months, the No. 12 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team showed no signs of rust and utilized team depth in defeating Allegheny College by a final score of 157-131 on Saturday afternoon at the David V. Wise Center.
The Spartans, ranked No. 12 in the latest College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, remain unblemished improving to 9-0 this season in dual meets. Case returns to action on Friday, January 27 when it plays host to cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace College in its final home dual match of the winter. The dual, scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., will also serve as Seniors' Night.
Freshman Alex Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) picked up the Spartans initial individual victory in the 100-yard backstroke, touching the wall in 53.81. In the very next event, sophomore Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) stopped the clock first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.75. Freshman Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) collected the Spartans' third event win in succession, leading the field to the wall in the 200 fly with a time of 1:58.82.
Several events later, sophomore Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor) paced the field to the wall by nearly three seconds in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.37).
In the final event of the afternoon, the sophomore quartet of Clyde, Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:27.18.
In addition to seven victories out of the 16 events contested, the Spartans also racked up numerous runner-up finishes.
In diving events, sophomore Daniel Jacobson (Solon, Ohio/Solon) won on both the one-meter (306.60 points) and three-meter (279.50) boards to rack up 18 combined team points.
