Spikers Finish Weekend 2-2 at Hiram Invitational; Southard Named to All-Tournament Team

HIRAM, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team posted a 1-1 record for the second straight day to finish 2-2 at the Hiram College Invitational this weekend. The Spartans defeated Geneva College (Pa.) before being swept by host Hiram College in the finale.

The Spartans (9-4 overall) got off to a quick start versus Geneva -- a team they swept just two weeks ago during the University of Mount Union Invitational -- winning the first set by a 25-11 score. Geneva took the second set by a narrow 25-23 margin before the Spartans won the final two sets via tallies of 25-14 and 27-25.

Senior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) and freshman Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) were the top offensive performers with 20 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the attack with 47 assists.

Defensively, junior libero Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) along with McCutchan and junior specialist Olivia Stanton-Ameisen (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Baldwin School) led the way with 19, 14 and 12 digs, respectively.

In the finale against Hiram, the Terriers grabbed three close set victories by counts of 25-20, 25-23 and 25-23. Southard totaled 11 kills on just 21 attempts with one error to go along with three block solos and four block assists.

For the weekend, Southard recorded 48 kills against just 11 errors for a .374 hitting percentage to go along with a combined seven block solos and 10 block assists. Freeman paced the offense with 23 assists, and Gulasey led the defense with 24 digs.

The Spartans are back in action Tuesday when they play host to The College of Wooster (9-1 overall) inside Horsburgh Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m.
