Box Score CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University women's soccer team saw its unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of local-rival John Carroll University by a score of 1-0 on Tuesday, September 13 at Case Field.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at JCU, but continued maintenance on the track at Don Shula Stadium forced the game location to be changed.
The Spartans fall to 3-1-1 overall and will return to action this Saturday, September 17, versus Otterbein University at 4:00 p.m. at Case Field. John Carroll improves to 3-2.
The Blue Streaks got on the board quickly in the fourth minute when the Spartan defense failed to clear a corner kick and Colleen Harmon volleyed a shot over senior goalkeeper Anna Kennedy (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township). The goal broke Kennedy's 354-minute, 34-second scoreless streak.
The Spartans best threat of the first half came in the 44th minute when senior forward Ana Arruda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) fired a shot from the box and missed just left of the net.
In the second half, the Spartans threatened again with a corner kick in the 62nd minute, but a header by junior midfielder Kendra Simmons (Medina, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) sailed high of the goal. The Spartans kept constant pressure around the net with several more tries via corner kick, but JCU was able to prevent the game-tying goal.
In goal, Kennedy recorded two saves in her first loss of the season. JCU's Lexi Korczynski played the first half to get the win, while Nicole Gyrs closed out the second half.
For the game, the Spartans outshot the Blue Streaks 11-5 and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
