Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team posted a 2-0 record for the second straight day to finish 4-0 at the 13th Annual Marcia French Memorial Tournament at the Veale Center. The Spartans swept both Westminster College (Pa.) and Bluffton College.
The Spartans (7-2 overall) were one of three squads to finish undefeated for the weekend in the 14-team tournament co-hosted by Case and Baldwin-Wallace College. Otterbein University won the team title by virtue of the best games record.
The Spartans got off to a quick start versus Westminster, winning 25-12, 25-22 and 25-12.
Senior middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, Ohio/Stephen T. Badin) and freshman Natalie Southard (Buffalo, N.Y./City Honors School) were the top offensive performers with nine and six kills, respectively. Junior setter Breana Freeman (Geneva, Ohio/Geneva) paced the attack with 30 assists.
Defensively, juniors Rachel Gulasey (Cleveland, Ohio/Magnificat) and Olivia Stanton-Ameisen (Bryn Mawr, Pa./The Baldwin School) led the way with 15 and 13 digs, respectively.
Versus Bluffton, Case won by counts of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-21. McCutchan totaled 10 kills and seven digs. For the weekend, she recorded 59 kills on a .380 hitting percentage. Freeman paced the offense with 20 assists and was named to the all-tournament team after posting 148 assists, 37 digs and 14 kills for the weekend. Stanton-Ameisen led the defense with 14 digs.
The Spartans are back in action next Friday and Saturday, September 16-17, with four matches at the Hiram College Tournament. Case opens the weekend versus Otterbein at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
